I went through Hell to see a friend 🇧🇻 🇸🇪
02/03/2024
🇧🇻 Trondheim → 🇸🇪 Storlien → Sundsvall
… and through other similar small towns on the Norwegian coast. Ah! I know, such a cheesy joke…
On this 30th day(!), I woke up earlier than I’ve done in quite a while to leave Trondheim. This time I see the fjord in the beautiful cold sunrise. The line follows the coast for a few kilometers, getting me a bit further North than ever before, before engulfing inside the land eastward towards Sweden. It’s another enchanting ride, following a frozen river. And I mean frozen: at places where the ice broke, it looks like freaking icebergs!
We’re gaining altitude as we go, reaching large snow-covered plateaus, in a pearly blanket of infinite size. It’s in that setting that we cross the border. I will miss Norway very much. It might just be the most beautiful country in the World. Although, even in the mere 23 I’ve visited, it has some challengers.
Hej Sverige!
And for good this time! I change train at the border town of Storlien for a pretty comfortable one. We raced through the perfectly white but flatter landscape of Sweden. We go by large frozen lakes, marking the scenery of their perfectly flat surface.
Arriving in Sundsvall in the early afternoon, there is a super thick fog over the city. The visibility is very poor (you can barely see buildings from the other side of the main square), and the temperature dropped significantly. The city itself isn’t too great I must say, so I tooke a bus early to drop my staff at the airbnb.
I’m not staying too long though, as I go back to the train station to pick up the one and only Alex, who is joining me for some polar adventures this week! He landed in Stockholm and had a five-hour train trip to get there, so he’s already in the mood!
We went for some grocery and beers, then came back to the airbnb and make too much pasta. I haven’t eaten pasta often at all this month, and fuck I forgot how much I missed it.
It’s good to have a travel companion again anyway. En route to the North!
Bonus: A timelapse from my roundtrip on the Flåm railway!
