🇨🇿 Český Krumlov
Rest day. Finally. The last one was, picture this, in Utrecht. On February 22nd! A month ago! Shit, I’m exhausted, so nothing happening today.
Well, actually I had to go out at noon. First because Český Krumlov is freaking beautiful and would be a crime to not gaze on it a bit more. Second, because I don’t have any more food for lunch and third but not least, my data reception being virtually unexisting and the wifi being literally unexisting in the airbnb, I had to climb the hill to be able to upload my overly late blogs, and last week’s video. Walking back towards the appartment, I stumbled upon the bear moat, which indeed, was occupied by two huge brown bears. The poor guys didn’t have much room to stroll around, and one of them was desperately trying to open a plastic bottle that some idiot must have thrown in their pit. That was a sad sight, and despite the majesty of these creatures, i couldn’t watch them too long. All in all I spent three hours outside, which is quite a lot for a rest day.
Back in the airbnb, located in the UNESCO-listed old town, I had time to take a look at which other UNESCO heritage sites I visited, seen from the train, or got very close by, in some cases without even noticing them. Here’s the list:
Canal du Midi; Seine banks in Paris; Liverpool waterfront; Conwry castle (I managed to not actually see it somehow); Giant’s Causeway; Old and New Towns of Edinburgh; Saltaire (might have been sleeping when the train crossed it); Lille Townhall Belfry; Brugge [Bruges] historic center; Brugge belfry; Brussel [Brussels] Grand-place; Luxembourg old city; Utrecht-Domplein lower German Lime of the Roman Frontier; Struve Geodetic Arc in Tornio (from far away); Suomenlinna fortress; Tallinn old town; Struve Geodetic Arc in Tartu; Rīga [Riga] historic center; Vilnius old center; Kaunas modern center (a tiny bit from the train); Kraków historic center; Malbork Castle; Praha [Prague] historic center; and finally Český Krumlov historic center.
Some of these sites will leave life-long memories in my head, others just make you wonder why the hell would that be a Heritage site. Too few natural sites to my liking, most are man-made. Whether built for scientific reasons, just for aesthetics, or stemming from the desire of some king nothing would satisfy more than having a bigger castle than his neighbour, they all have stories to tell, stories that I’m depressingly not learning. That’s definitely one of my big lack of this trip: learning more about where I went, am and go.
At least I know from Petr that the tradition is to be silent when walking under Český Krumlov multi-arch bridge.
In the evening, as I was eating, I suddenly realized that I didn’t know where I’ll be sleeping tomorrow, not even in which city. And I also realized I didn’t give a damn about it right now. Finally, I had reached it. That feeling I have been seeking for nearly two months: letting go. I nonetheless planned the next three nights in Austria as it’s the last expensive country before a while, but what comes next will be way more chill.
