🇨🇭 Chur → St. Moritz → Landquart GR → Sargans → Sevelen SG

It’s mid-morning already when we make our prison break. We escape Chur by train, towards St. Moritz.

The two-hour ride took us through the Albula railway and part of the Bernina railway, a good chunk of which is classified as a UNESCO Heritage Site. And it wasn’t too hard to guess why: it was freaking stunning! Dozens of bridges and tunnels, a high bridge transitionning directly into a tunnel entering the steep cliff face, and an helicoidal section to gain 400 m of elevation, which also included bridges and tunnels. Truly a marvellous feat of engineering, and a top addition to this trip collection. We followed the Albula river from very far above, passing by jaw-dropping cliffs.

Getting nearer St. Moritz, the landscape changed for vast grassy plateaus, doted with millions of yellow flowers, towered by ominous white peaks. All this trip could have been done with the Glacier Express or the Bernina Express, but ah! We did everything for free on regional trains! Here comes revenge, swiss prices!

We had four hours to enjoy St. Moritz and its lake, so we went for a tour of the lake. We did the « nature » half, in the tree shades. It’s sadly a vast ski resort, with dozens of humongous hotels built, spoiling a postcard-perfect landscape. So we went back through the same half of the lake shore, but on a higher foresty path. The calm and pure air of the mountains were a bliss, as was the deliciious cold streal water.

Back in a train, but going in a different branch of this network, that got us pretty close to the one Switzerland National Park, the aptly-named Swiss NP. Again, some wonderful sceneries passing by the windows. We were deep in talk and we would have totally missed our stop in Landquart GR [Landquart, Switzerland] if it had not been the terminus. Oops!

A bit of grocery while waiting, and we were on a short ride to Sargans.

Even less time to wait there, and finally it was the last train of the day, direction Sevelen SG [Sevelen, Switzerland]. Our airbnb was a bit of a hike away, but was very comfy, in an old farmhouse.

And there was a very cute cat!
