A-bus-ed 🇲🇹
15/06/2024
🇲🇹 Żebbuġ → Għajnsielem → Mellieħa → Ħamrun → Il-Marsa → Qrendi → Furjana → Ħamrun → Tas-Sliema → San Ġiljan → Tas-Sliema
Woke up late again, but what a comfy hostel this is (Santa Marta, in Żebbuġ!) After breakfast, I leave at 10:45 for the bus crossing the whole Gozo to Għajnsielem, to take the ferry at noon.
It’s a different boat (that I again forgot to take a picture of), and I have a nice seat on the first row, looking straight forward. We pass Comino island, and 30 min later, we disembark in Mellieħa on Malta island.
From there I had decided to visit more megalithic temples. It took over two hours with two buses to get there.
The temples are called Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra, and are barely younger than the Ġgantija temple of Gozo, at over 5,000 years old! It seems that more rebuilding has been done to them though. They are much bigger complexes that in Gozo, and quite impressive to walkthrough. When scientists recently noticed that the Sun was bullying the temples’ stones by screaming to them « You must burn! » while throwing tons of radiative heat at them, they built a temporary protective solution in the shape of a huge circus tent. It’s not that bad to be honest.
After the visit, I was back for another hour of bus, until finally I could check in in the same hostel as a few nights ago in Tas-Sliema [Sliema]. I had an omelette and a beer on a terrace overlooking a bay, facing the setting sun. However, I came back early: the alarm is set to ring at 3:45 AM…
It’s the last half-month! Time for a summary and last forethoughts for what is coming! Yes, we’re in the Endgame now… I can’t believe it’ll be over in two or three weeks. It’s all gone too fast!
This start of the month was quite eratic, starting by the route: from San Marino northward to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, and then South all the way to Vatican City. And then much more South to Malta, reaching the Southern-most point of the whole adventure!
It was a half-month of stupid ideas, like crossing an entire country by foot in Liechtenstein, or sleeping on the street to stay 24 h in Vatican City. Despite starting with the amazing vintage train in San Marino, this month saw the first two countries without trains, Vatican City and Malta.
36 countries done, and the last four coming: Monaco, Andorra, Spain and Portugal, and again crossing Italy and France after leaving Malta.
Let’s finish this!
Train count: + 0
Total: 285
