The French Invasion of Ireland (2024-) 🇮🇪

06/02/2024

🇮🇪 Dublin → Ballykisteen → Limerick → Galway

The sun is shining this morning, my towel and my gloves are dry, and I can wake up late. This day is starting much better already!

I walk along the Liffey river, which is super high (I wasn’t kidding when I said it was rainy yesterday!) and walk past at least two Guiness lorries and a factory on my way to Heuston station. There I board the 10th train of the expedition! I finally get to see those green Irish fields, although around Dublin the topography is rather flat.

We arrive a bit late at Limerick Junction station, actually later than when my next train was supposed to leave, but no worries, they were waiting for us, like they do in civilized countries like Croatia. From that point on, the hills starts to roll and the scenery keeps getting more interesting.

I have an hour in Limerick, and frankly it doesn’t seem to have much to offer, so I’m glad I’m spending two nights in Galway instead. Where the next train took me. Now they are finally here, the legendary rolling green hills of the Republic of Ireland. It is giving a good fight to Slovenia for the greenest green emerald ngl.

After checking in at the hostel, I hit the streets of Galway. It’s a much smaller, quieter town, but it is lovely. It’s much more my kind of place than Dublin. I walk along the quaysides, before going for dinner super early (but it’s pitch dark at 17:30, what can you do?)

I was writing this very blog entry when I met with three fellow Frenchies, Clément, Valentine and Arthur. The latter two invite me to join them to the pub, and who am I to refuse? My plan to have an early night took a welcome whiplash, and we hit the pub. I honestly expected that asking for a Guiness would be a cliché, but no, all locals drink it. A lot.

Later, we changed bar and were joined by four other french girls and a dutch girl from the hostel. It’s a true French invasion here!

Overall a great day! I must admit Dublin gave me a mediocre first impression of the Republic of Ireland, but it’s fast growing on me now.
