The Cliffs of Somewhere 🇮🇪
08/02/2024
🇮🇪 Galway→ Doolin → Liscannor → Galway
If you know me, you know that I hate the bus. But today was different. I took a round-trip to the Cliffs of Moher, by the slow local bus. And it was a magical trip! It follows the rugged coastline through some truly epic sceneries of broken rock slapped relentlessly by the sea.
After 2 h, I dropped off at the village of Doolin, starting a hike to the top of the Cliffs from the North. My oh my, the vistas are truly spectacular! Some truly majestic grasslands, atop mighty cliffs, some dozen meters above the sea. It was quite thriling. And the weather wasn’t even too bad, just very cloudy. At some point, I even got a rainbow and with it the faint hope of seeing some sun.
Unfortunately, the weather turned for the worst (thankfully after I got some great far-away view on the Cliffs) for the second hour of the hike. The path was very muddy, locally even boggy, with my left foot plunging in a trap. Heavy rain, freezing temperatures, and a very powerful wind. All that while walking some meters away from the cliffside (but let’s be really, there’s no chance of falling from the path).
When I finally reached the top, the cliff summits were completely covered in clouds. Bah… At least it gave it a mystical feel to them, like entering the realm of some phantom Lord. But I’m gutted I wasn’t smart enough to do the hike in the opposite direction, and seeing them while weather was good.
Still very worth the hike!
