🇩🇰 København
After a surprising night. I spent most of the morning walking through the Nortern part of København [Copenhagen] city center. There are several large public parks located near one another in a very convenient path towards the old star-shaped fortress of Kastellet. The park behind the Museum for Kunst had a decent population of squirels, which were not too scared of people.
Kastellet was an interesting place to walk through, with it’s high grassy remparts, large moat and red buildings. It’s just outside of the fortress that lies, or rather sits, the famous Little Mermaid statue. I’ve seen countless opinions that the statue was underwhelming, but quite frankly I call that a good one. She’s on a pile of big rocks, a couple meters away from the walkway, providing great photo opportunities. A bit unfortunate about the industrial background though. It also protects her from any damage, inc. from annoying selfying tourists.
One surprising thing about København is that it’s the biking capital. Seriously, forget Amsterdam. Here, bikes are everywhere. The infrastructure has been nicely thought around it, with bike lanes being large as small streets at times, and tons of parking spots. Really cool to see a wave of cyclists go through an intersection once the light is green.
After strolling for about three hours, I get back to the hostel in the early afternoon, and elected to stay there to get some rest.
Random fun fact: The Danish Realm and Equatorial Guinea (for the moment) are the only to countries in the World to have a continental part, but to have their capital cities on an island!
Anyway…
Later in the evening, I tried to find some cheap food, and ended up to KFC hoping I wouldn’t have to sell an organ to have a decent meal (København is expensive af). But no, 12 € for 6 small pieces of chicken. Bah…
I came back to the hostel’s bar for the live music event, and ended up making friends with a bunch of young guys from the hostel. We had Japanese, Swedes, Italian, French, Moroccan… A true international meeting. They paid me quite a few shots, and the evening got much better than I anticipated.
Fun night!
