Interrail's Prestige 🇸🇮

22/05/2024

🇸🇮 Postojna → Ljubljana → Celje

The Postojna station is quite uphill compared to the rest of town, so that’s some good exercise in the morning. The ride is much more scenic without clouds blocking view of the valley and the background mountains.

I have a change in Ljubljana, with just enough time to grab a bite, and off I go towards Eastern Slovenia. I’m in a fast InterCity train, but it still has to go very gently while following the canyon of the Save river. Another beautiful Slovene ride, between green water and green mountains!

In Celje, I’m immediately greeted by a stunning town center. It’s a lovely city to walk in. I check in at the hostel and immediately go on for a hike to the Celje castle, perched high on a hill. Once again I thought I’d be smarter than the GPS and take a road that looks cooler, but it was actually, indeed, a road. Well, I didn’t see many cars and the view was great, so I’m not complaining.

If I remember correctly, the castle is from the 13th century, built on the order of some junior dad Count. The highest tower offers an amazing 360 ° swipe over all the area around. I’ll never say it enough, but Slovenia is GORGEOUS! You know what? I’ll dub it the budget Switzerland. With much smaller mountains though. And I mean that literally, not as in « cheap quality ». It’s green, it’s mountainous, it’s clean and unspoilt… The dream.

On my way back I had some issues finding the trailhead, which was quite a bit hidden if I may say so. When I found the zigzagging track down the steep cliffside, I was happy to have taken the other route. Just going down there was exhausting!

Back in the city center, I went for a walk and a drink. Later, I got a phone call with my friend Nicolas, who will join me in Switzerland for the first week of June! But when I went to book some trips in the Interrail app… catastrophe.

My passes and travels had vanished.

Purely and simply vanished. Panick. Googling. I open a support ticket, hoping to get contacted before tomorrow morning. And they were super fast to answer! However, the news weren’t so good. Yes, they could help me get my Pass back. However, all the travels (meaning the list of trains I took, the map and the stats). I know this is not the end of the World, but a bit devastating for a stats nerd like me.

Before that, I tried to backup the app data, using an external SSD and even trying to transfer to my spare smartphone (which btw, was still at 89% after 3 months being turned on, Redmi rocks!) but to no avail. So I sadly uninstalled the app and reinstalled it.

And miracle! Everything came back! Oof, all that drama for nothing!
